The idea that haste is counterproductive is an ancient one and can be found int he Book of Wisdom in 190 BC. by Jesus Ben Sirachn wich contained the line « There is one that toileth and laboureth, and maketh haste, and is so much more behind ».
Centuries later, Chaucer wrote in Canterbury Tales (c.1387) « In wikked haste is not profit ».
This exact phrase, however, occurs much later and the first recorded instance is in 1575.
It is also found in John Ray’s 1678 proverb collection:
« Haste makes waste, and waste makes want, and want makes strife between the Goodman ans his wife »
