Beyond general business language : sector-specific, technical language training
Some professionals need to improve their language skills across the board, whilst also building up a more technical, specialist vocabulary in order to communicate effectively in a very specific role or context.
Industry-specific language training courses enable learners to develop the language skills specific to their role by working with authentic documents. This is combined with work on the cross-disciplinary language and professional skills essential to the role (handling telephone calls, reading and writing emails and reports, taking part in meetings or teleconferences, managing negotiations, giving presentations, etc.). The language skills developed are thus systematically applied and integrated back into the learners’ professional context.
Our experience in the corporate world has enabled us to provide training for over 150 different roles over the past 40 years, tailoring our teaching approach to the specific needs of each of these professions.
How is the course structured?
A third of the course is devoted to activities devised by the teacher based on professional documents brought to class by the learner. Whether it is an annual report, a detailed email exchange or a technical presentation, this document will enable learners to practice language use in context. Rather than undigestible vocabulary lists, this context-based approach allows learners to build a clear link between their training and their professional performance.
The remaining two-thirds of the course are devoted to developing cross-cutting language skills, according to each learner’s priorities: speaking, listening, conversing, reading and writing.
